DESCRIPTION:Janette Kerr – Hon Royal Scottish Academician\, RWA Academician and Past President of the RWA \nPlease note – the date of this talk has been changed from the 3rd Dec to the 26th Nov. \nJanette Kerr is a painter deeply embedded in place\, working at the interface between land\, sea\, and historical experience. For the last 15 years she has focussed primarily on Shetland and the far north\, traveling extensively to wild sea and weather-scoured places\, but also working more locally in Somerset. She will be discussing her practice and some of the projects/residencies she has been involved with. This will include (in no particular order): \nMaking work beyond the representational and passive \nDialogues between artist\, landscape and the act of drawing \nBeing prepared to lose ourselves in the encounter and losing control \nCollaborations and projects \nNot knowing and knowing when a work is complete \n\nAnyone participating in Clifton Arts Club activities does so at their own risk. SUMMARY:Soft Pastel workshop with Richard Sucking
DESCRIPTION:An interpretive Approach to Soft Pastel Landscapes and Seascapes \nA one day workshop tackling landscapes and seascapes in soft pastels. The workshop will concentrate on an interpretive approach to the subject making full use of the versatility of the pastel medium. The foundation skills of composition\, tone and colour will be addressed but we will also be looking to loosen up and experiment\, embracing bold mark making and semi abstract elements. We will always be aiming to make an interpretation of our subject matter that captures the essence of the scene.\nMaterials list\nA selection of soft pastels minimum of thirty full or half sticks or more if you have them. Please ensure they are artists soft pastels not hard or oil pastels. Sennelier\, Schminke and Unison Colour all produce half stick sets that are suitable for this workshop. Ensure that you have a good selection of tones especially some darks as these are often lacking in sets.\nPaper – I will be using primarily Canson Velvet Pastel Paper but Pastelmat\, Sennelier Multi media pastel card\, Canson Touch\, Uart and Colourfix are all suitable choices.\nGlassine paper to protect your pastel paintings.\nPastel Liquifier [ Jackson’s Art ] or a cheaper alternative is isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle [ available online from Amazon ] I will bring some alcohol with me but the amount is limited depending on the size of the class.\nLarge wash brush or soft varnishing brush.\nMasking tape.\nWet wipes. \nArtist Bio \nRichard Suckling studied illustration at Cambridge School of Art and worked for a number of years as an illustrator in London\, before relocating to the beautiful West of England to pursue a new career as a painter. Richard now lives in the fishing village of Newlyn in the West of Cornwall and works in soft pastels and mixed media. He sells his work worldwide through galleries in the UK and Europe as well as privately through his social media pages and website [www.richardsuckling.co.uk].  \nAnyone participating in Clifton Arts Club activities does so at their own risk.
