Soft Pastel workshop with Richard Sucking
An interpretive Approach to Soft Pastel Landscapes and Seascapes
A one day workshop tackling landscapes and seascapes in soft pastels. The workshop will concentrate on an interpretive approach to the subject making full use of the versatility of the pastel medium. The foundation skills of composition, tone and colour will be addressed but we will also be looking to loosen up and experiment, embracing bold mark making and semi abstract elements. We will always be aiming to make an interpretation of our subject matter that captures the essence of the scene.
Materials list
A selection of soft pastels minimum of thirty full or half sticks or more if you have them. Please ensure they are artists soft pastels not hard or oil pastels. Sennelier, Schminke and Unison Colour all produce half stick sets that are suitable for this workshop. Ensure that you have a good selection of tones especially some darks as these are often lacking in sets.
Paper – I will be using primarily Canson Velvet Pastel Paper but Pastelmat, Sennelier Multi media pastel card, Canson Touch, Uart and Colourfix are all suitable choices.
Glassine paper to protect your pastel paintings.
Pastel Liquifier [ Jackson’s Art ] or a cheaper alternative is isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle [ available online from Amazon ] I will bring some alcohol with me but the amount is limited depending on the size of the class.
Large wash brush or soft varnishing brush.
Masking tape.
Wet wipes.
Artist Bio
Richard Suckling studied illustration at Cambridge School of Art and worked for a number of years as an illustrator in London, before relocating to the beautiful West of England to pursue a new career as a painter. Richard now lives in the fishing village of Newlyn in the West of Cornwall and works in soft pastels and mixed media.
